New wave feeding?

During my time spent as a raw feeder I have been accused of scare mongering and causing panic amoung fellow pet owners, I have had my mouth shut on groups and forums by people who ought to know better. I have been given grief by vets who ought to know better - so I found a better vet !!

I make no apologies for this, they should be scared, they should be questioning what they are putting into their dogs mouths, but they console themselves with the fact that they only buy 'good quality', expensive' commercial food, which misses the point entirely.

What never ceases to amaze me is the fact that fellow breeders will take the trouble to put relevant health checks in place for breeding purposes, they must be seen to be doing the right thing and yet they will then feed their dog on junk food as they truly believe that they are doing the best for their dogs (Or do they? is the need to feed commercially born from convenience?)

I am filled with a mixture of annoyance at their ignorance and anger at their arrogance, will they never learn?

To all the breeders/petowners/know-it-alls out there I would like to say this, raw feeding is not a new wave method of feeding, it is as natural as the leaves on the trees and incidently has been in place probably as long.  Ours is not the new wave method of feeding - far from it !!

My wish is not to offend my good friends who do still feed commercially, I respect that is your choice and will probably still continue to try and convert you - but hey !! what are friends for  !!  The above statement is niether aimed at people who do feed their dog commercially, I am here to try and persuade you otherwise ....but no.....the above statements are aimed at the people who have openly critized my methods and closed their mind to the possibility that they could actually be wrong.

Our diet is what our dogs were born to eat, we talk about Human Rights, what about Canine Rights ??  it is such a simple thing to feed a dog what it is born to eat, but NO........for the first time in it's  evolutionary history a dog is being forced to eat something which it is not biologically designed to cope with, how unfair is that?

So I say to all you die hard commercial feeders.....think again !!

It is not the commercial method of feeding which has been in place for centuries and centuries, but the raw............. it is your commercial method of feeding which is a 'new wave' method  .........and in less than a century it has had a catastrophic effect on our pet's health.............. how much longer must this continue for people to see the light?

How did we arrive at this point with canine nutrition?

How indeed? let us rewind in time and go back to the 1930s, it was between 1930 and 1950 that commercial dog foods hit the growing pet industry in a big way.

Some bright spark somewhere thought it was a great idea to put all the unusable products and bi-products of meat together with cereal and stick it into a can with a label of dog food, we then progressed to kibble in much the same way, the main problem being that the food was all cereal based and not only that it was cooked !!!

Added to it was a cocktail of colourants, preservatives and dubious 'vitamins' .

But it was convenient, it was easy, no more wondering what was on the canine menu, just open a can and it's done !!  or worse still, feed complete, you've only got to look at the packaging to realise that we could do no better for our dogs nutritional needs, look, it says so........

And so it started..................The nations fixation with ready made meals for dogs, 10 years later nobody could remember what on earth dogs had been fed on before, what were they fed on?    Who cares ??

At that point in time it appeared not many people cared at all about what was happening to our pets, certainly not the pet food industry, why would they, they were onto a winner, everybody loved the idea of just opening a can, or just scooping the rations of kibble out at the beginning of the day and allowing the dog to 'pick' all day long, thus encouraging picky eaters.

And so began the diet related crisis, which then swept our nation, our pets developed so many diet related illnesses that the vetinary industry boomed, and yet still we carried on feeding our pets the very stuff that was causing the problems in the first place.

As time went on noticible differences were occurring in our pet's health, still nobody could or would make the connection, we began to see epidemics in illnesses which previously had hardly been seen........ One example is hip dysplasia, numerous efforts and schemes have been put in place worldwide to breed this disease out genetically and every effort has failed, we still have a tremendous problem with this disease and yet before the 1930s it had barely been heard of.

During this time the pet industry was growing like a war machine as it spread it's contamination, the Vetinary profession started to become dependant on the pet food industry for funding for their drugs trials and  seminars, the industry had infiltrated our pets last defence, the barriers went down and our pet's health plumeted.

Still no connection was made............People couldn't remember that previous to the introduction of the new wonder diet dogs had survived on a diet of table scraps, bones saved from their local butchers and meat, and had done extremely well on it, they lived a healthy, long life, then all of a sudden, the lifespan of our pets began to shorten, still no connection was made, our pets were in serious peril....................

I strongly believe that the hip-dyslplasia epidemic which we are seeing today is man-made and has been fuelled by our commercial feeding practises, this coupled with bad puppy management  ( If you would like to know more about bad management and what IS appropriate exercise for a puppy, please go to my main site)

I also believe that this along with more diseases both structural  and otherwise can be bred out of our dogs to a great degree with correct feeding and management.
